When working with children who have experienced trauma, One Family Illinois emphasizes the importance that all children do not respond the same way and often have different reactions. Therefore, One Family Illinois Foster Parents – as caregivers to children who are affected by trauma – are taught to understand the triggers of their children and how each child looks when he or she is angry, sad, excited, worried, etc.
Our Foster Parents and clinical therapists often find the most important action is to simply be there to provide support, and to help children name, understand, and regulate their feelings. The key outcome of children learning this leads to them being able to solve their problems, which is critical to their development in becoming self-reliant adults.
