April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and One Family Illinois is proudly heading into it with a mission based on healing and programs geared towards prevention.
Staggering Statistics
In 2016, there were approximately 676,000 children throughout our nation that fell victim to abuse and neglect. Studies show that adverse childhood experiences greatly impact the health of children as they grow and age into adults, including psychological disorders and a large decrease in their lifespans. Every day in the U.S., 4-7 children die from child abuse and neglect.
As shocking and terrifying as it may sound, we are committed to working together to end child abuse and providing spaces of healing and love for those affected.
How You Can Help Prevent and Respond to Child Abuse
Children need advocates, and they need others looking out for them who are willing to speak up. Child abuse and neglect can be prevented if we all work together at recognizing and reporting suspected abuse. Learn how to recognize child abuse.
There are many ways you can help prevent child abuse in your own community and with us at One Family Illinois. Here’s how to make a difference:
Become a mentor
Volunteer to coach your local rec team. Lead a parent support group. Help out at a school in your area. Lend a hand to the new parents on your block by babysitting. Become a tutor with One Family Illinois to offer your talents to children in healing.
Be an advocate
Spread awareness throughout your community. Contact your local government officials, and let them know how important protecting our youth is for you and your family. Invite your friends to subscribe to our e-newsletter to encourage others to learn more about our stories of healing.
Donate to the children
Donate your gently used and unwanted items to places like our preventative services site, Casa Tepeyac. Offer much needed supplies and non-profit donations that assist One Family Illinois in creating better futures for our dreamers.
