270-Day Goals: “On Target” for All
At the onset of any construction project, a master list of all tasks is created, along with the estimated timeline to complete the work. In the construction industry, they call this list a construction schedule; and it sets the course for the project. The contractor and all the sub-contractors then order materials, gather equipment and prepare their teams according to the timeframe provided.
The construction schedule for the Roosevelt Square Community Center was planned with a twelve-month long timeline. As with any construction project, one anticipates there may be minor setbacks, delays, or revisions. However, despite this and so much more due to the pandemic, with three-quarters of the construction schedule complete, we are proud to share our “270-Day Goals” are remarkably all “On Target.”
In June 2020, One Family Illinois saw the last few weeks of work include construction on the north and east canopies over the main entrance to the building. Additionally, other exterior work involved the continued work of all framing, sheathing, and waterproofing work. Storefront installation is complete; and installation of corrugated metal panels is in progress on the north, west, and south elevations.
Work inside the building continued at a great pace as well. Tile work in the bathrooms began, as did work to add clear timber sealer to the cross-laminated timber, a sustainable feature of the building. Also, with a generous donation, the air conditioning units for the building were installed, in advance of the wood doors and finishes. The last of the drywall was hung and taped. This made way for painters to begin priming and painting the walls. Also, all suspended overhead ductwork has been completed; and all rooftop equipment has been set in place with gas piping connected.
Other work consisted of trenching for the transformer pad, detention tank, and power cables. Significant work also was completed on the initial stages of the parking lot. We look forward to more progress this summer.
Construction Timetable
As you will notice from the construction timeline presented in the last few blogs and below in this update, our friends at Lendlease have helped us achieve a great victory by keeping to our construction schedule. Supporting our children and families, Foster Parents, and staff is more important now than ever, and our new center will help us in so many capacities by providing needed programs and services. Below is a timetable of the community center’s construction:
Construction Began – October 2019
Foundation Complete – December 2019
Structure Complete – February 2020
Structure Enclosed – June 2020
Occupancy of Center – Mid-September 2020
Construction Complete – End of September 2020
The Roosevelt Square Community Center
This center, an 11,000 square foot space, will serve the children and families at our Roosevelt Square Village and surrounding communities. Programs will include academic, therapeutic, social, and recreational support; multi-use spaces for community members to connect to public resources and engage in training, activities, and events; as well as a signature culinary kitchen providing food and nutrition education, and jobs-skills training for the hospitality industry. In addition to the over one hundred children and families cared for by One Family Illinois, more than 5,000 people from the surrounding neighborhoods will be served by the center.
