Children in foster care are on average one year behind their peers in school. One Family Illinois helped our kids catch up and get ahead with a summer reading and literacy group.
Throughout the summer, our Preschool and Kindergarten-aged children enjoyed a reading group led by Sara, who has just begun her freshman year of high school. For an hour and a half almost every day this summer, Sara and other members of our One Family Illinois Family gathered to read stories, complete worksheets, and enjoy activities together.
The reading circles allowed our young children to practice their “listening ears” and prepare for school while having fun and building community. With this support and the ongoing care of our One Family Illinois Foster Parents, our children will keep up with their peers, succeed in school, and grow into caring, productive, self-reliant adults.
